Oklahoma City Preschoolers and Read Across America Day

March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Why is that significant to preschoolers? Because it’s also the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day. The NEA began its first Read Across America Day on March 2nd, 1998 in an effort to get kids across the country reading more.
For preschoolers, this usually means having a parent or older sibling read to them. Studies have shown that preschoolers who are read to develop good reading habits as they grow up. Reading is a fundamental part of a preschooler’s future, as better reading makes for better success in education, employment, and almost every lifetime achievement.
How can I get my preschooler involved in Read Across America Day?
You and your preschooler can plan for a cozy afternoon of reading! Bring your preschooler and a backpack to one of Oklahoma City’s Metropolitan Library System branch locations. Fill up the backpack with a day’s worth of books for preschoolers and head for the checkout counter.
Another way to plan for Read Across America Day is to purchase several good preschool books. New releases such as The Old Steam Train, Who is Driving?, and Two Eggs, Please are sure to put a kick start in your Read Across America Day. Old favorites such as Winnie the Pooh, Goodnight Moon, and Corduroy will always have your preschooler asking you to “Read it again, please!” And in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, why not add Green Eggs and Ham, Fox in Socks, and Hop on Pop to your shopping cart?

The National Education Association’s website offers parents and providers of preschoolers a variety of ways to participate in Read Across America Day. From taking a participation pledge to voting on your favorite books, you can join the NEA in making Read Across America Day a huge success!
